Background

In February 2003, Active Schools was identified as a key element of the Scottish Executive's drive to get more Scottish people more active - a commitment outlined in the National Physical Activity Strategy.

As a result of Sportscotland's successful work with the original School Sport Co-ordinator and Active Primary School Co-ordinator programmes, the Scottish Executive provided funding for Sportscotland to roll out the Active Schools programme to more schools throughout scotland.

Details of current support for the Active Schools Programme can be found in Sportscotland's coporate plan 2007/2011 linked to the Scottish Executive's National Strategy for Sport: Reaching Higher Building on the Success of Sport21.
