There are two options for a Short Course in the RMPS department.
Sci-Phi: Philosophy in Film This option is run in S3 only, during the Short Course double-period. Pupils will study a variety of philosophical questions, using a variety of films and clips to aid discussion on abstract and often challenging areas of enquiry. Examples of questions discussed are: How do I know I exist? What is knowledge? Do we have free will? Can we ever prove that God exists? Two of the units studied will be assessed at Intermediate 2 level, allowing pupils the option of two separate unit qualifications in Intermediate 2 Philosophy. These will be in-house NAB assessments. There will be no exam at the end of the year, but certificates for any assessments passed will be posted out in the summer. Intermediate 1 & 2 RMPS (Full Course) This option is run during the Short Course double-period over both S3 & S4. Pupils will be working towards a full SQA qualification in Intermediate 1 or 2 RMPS. As such, pupils will be required to pass 3 in-house NAB assessments, and sit an exam at the end of S4. This will be treated as an extra full subject, and homework and revision will be a necessary part of the course. Topics studied in the full course are as follows: 1. World Religion: Islam (An in-depth study into the world's fastest growing religion) 2. Morality in the Modern World: Globalisation (An in-depth study into the process of globalisation, trade, and aid, and their effects on the third world.) 3. The Existence of God (Pupils will undertake a philosophical study into some of the possible proofs for the existence of God, the criticisms of these, and the issues arising from the existence of suffering and evil in the world.) |
