Trip to the Bar

Meldrum Academy recently participated in the Bar Association Mock Trial in Glasgow’s high court. The event was a hard task as a range of competitors turned up. The day turned up its best and its worst for Meldrum. The first heat should have really been won by us, Lucy McLeod and Ellen Rothnie put forward an absolute stormer of a defence, Rebecca Powell played a very convincing accused and Rhona Geddes played a solid good witness, seems the judge must not have been paying attention to the blithering Court Clark at the front of the room who wasn’t doing well at all or to the “policeman” who got a little bit flustered with the questions he was given , disappointing stuff and unfair for us.

Meldrums second heat was most enjoyable, Ellen Rothnie and Lucy McLeod again played a good defence and our witness Amanda Taylor put on a humorous but solid performance and our accused Mathew McKay played a brilliant role and was very quick in his answering. However, as is Meldrum’s luck we were faced with the next actress of the year award winner who came on and started bubbling, credit to the oppositions though, they were very good and obviously well practised in the tournament before and deserved to win.

The third heat saw myself and Iain price get owned by a defence lawyer who looked to be of about 8 years old with a huge tie on, the tie itself was bigger than his body. The judge we were given looked to have some sort of an assistant with him, we don’t know why there was two of them but the assistant took a fond liking to me in his praise at the end. No such luck though! Our witness Rhona Geddes played a solid part again, but we lost that round also, but thoroughly enjoyed the day and the experience and managed to get a wide range of pictures throughout the day, they can be seen in and around the school.

Everyone who took part in the mock trials did exceptionally well and should be pleased with their efforts, if it wasn’t for crying idiots and an error in judgement from one of the judges we may have won the day. Efforts were good though and a thanks goes out to Mr Merson who organised the trip for us and also lent me his tie, cheers!
